2 May

This is the Petts Wood May Fayre parade, led by the Bloco Fogo drumming band. It was very loud indeed!

Here is the new May Queen followed by her entourage.

The Mayor crowned the new May Queen and she gave her speech. After that was the maypole dancing. This is the Orpington May Queen group in pink and white.

We watched a judo group and a dancing group, they were very good.

4 May

Today we went to Richmond Park to see the azaleas in the Isabella Plantation.

We walked around the woodland where old trees are allowed to decompose. Some are left standing but this huge one has been felled, and often the logs are left as seats. They are nice and warm to sit on as well!

The woods are full of the bigger rhododendrons and the more yellowy and orange ones, with bluebell patches everywhere.

This is the round pond, and our favourite part - the stepping "stone" log-ends.

Huge leaves - good place for teddies if it rains! This is a pocket handkerchief tree, the first time we have seen it.

The business end of an enormous felled tree, lots of homes for bugs and insects. One last walk through the bluebell area again before going home.

5 May

Today we went to St Paul's Church in Covent Garden, to see the Punch and Judy Festival.

There were some Pearly Kings and Queens walking around.

There were two long rows of the tents along each side the garden, and a show in each of them in turn. They always have a clock on the front showing the time of the next performance.

Our favourite character, the Crocodile with the loud snappy jaws. There were lots of character puppets on sale as well, and souvenirs.

Afterwards we had our sandwiches sitting on this bench facing the River Thames. All the seats are raised, so you can see over the wall and watch the river. All the seats are either sphinxes or camels at the ends and middle.

15 May

We went to a fair in Dulwich Park. These animals are from a local city farm, with sheep, hens, rabbits, and maybe others but they might have been hiding in their boxes!

This is a maypole for visitors to dance around, all directed by the lady in charge, it had both traditional tunes and some modern ones.

The man showed us the queen bee with a paint dot on her back.

Walking back to the station we saw this lovely knitted pillar box topper.

19 May

While out shopping, we popped into Kelsey Park for our snack. The ducks were all snoozing, but the crows were very alert and walking around behind our bench, in case of freebies.

22 May

Our big outing today, we took the train to Luton and walked to Stockwood Park for the radio rally boot sale. Afterwards we went round the Victorian gardens in the Discovery Centre.

There are lots of paths, hedges and corners, it is one of my favourite places.

We always visit the hens in the Wartime Garden. They look very happy with straw to scratch around in, a private little house and hanging water dishes.

Near the cafe we stopped to see the fish in this square pond. They and visitors are kept safe by this close grille. There are lots of plants so plenty of places to hide and be out of sight and out of the sun.
